On September 21st, 2018, the USAID EMPOWER Private Sector project in partnership with Sida signed grant agreements with two different manufacturing companies in Kosovo, Mahagoni and Pista-Ekoplast.
A grant was signed with wood-processing company Mahagoni to purchase new equipment that will enable the company to increase the quality of its products. Based in Peja, Mahogoni operates since the year 2000. It produces MDF products such as kitchen cabinets, bedrooms, and tables. Mahagoni exports over 60% of its products to Switzerland, Austria, and Germany and recently opened a showroom in Zurich, Switzerland. The grant support will empower the company to increase exports further and create 26 new jobs within the next two years.
Plastic recycling company Pista-Ekoplast, from Rahovec, was awarded a grant which will enable it to diversify its product line. The company collects around 300 tons of plastic waste per year from around Kosovo which it then turns into polyethylene granulates used for the production of plastic products, mostly plastic irrigation pipes. The grant will enable the company to purchase molds to produce valves for the production of drip irrigation pipes. It is expected that the company will create 20 new jobs in the next two years, through the grant support.
